ACTIVITY ITINERARY AND DESCRIPTION:
Day 1: CUSCO – PISAQ – OLLANTAYTAMBO – AGUAS CALIENTES
We will pick you up at your hotel in Cusco around 8:00 am and begin our journey. We will meet up with the rest of the group and drive to Pisac to discover our first Inca ruins of the tour. In Pisac, you can see magnificent Inca remains and the ancient architecture and engineering of the Inca temples will sweep you off your feet. Our guided tour of the Pisac ruins takes about 2 hours and then we will head back into the town to visit the most colorful and traditional local market in Pisaq. Here you can buy traditional textiles for great prices and support the local economy. After our visit to the market, our sightseeing continues and we will continue our drive through beautiful Sacred Valley. This area was the breadbasket of the Incas and still produces large amounts of corn on the Inca terraces that will be visible along the ride. Our next destination isUrubamba, where we´ll arrive around 1:00 pm to enjoy lunch in one of the local restaurants. From Urubamba, it is just 30 minutes to get to the last Inca ruin site of the day known as Ollantaytambo (Inca palace). This site was built with pink granite rocks and is another impressive example of Inca craftsmanship. Here you can see the second biggest rock from the Inca’s time (90 tons) which was used as part of the Temple of the Sun. After your tour, you will have extra time to wander around the site before eating dinner in one of the local restaurants (dependent on your train time). In the evening, you will walk for about 15 minutes to head to the train station in the town. Your train will depart at 4:36 pm or 7:00 pm (depending on availability) to Aguas Calientes, which will be a 2 hour journey.
Day 2: AGUAS CALIENTES – MACHU PICCHU – CUSCO
Today is the most important day, as we will be visiting Machu Picchu. Because it’s so special, we encourage you to wake up early in the morning to enjoy breakfast at the hotel and then head to the bus station to try to catch one of the first buses, beginning at 5:30 am (they are all on a first come first serve basis). The bus will take about 25 min to get to Machu Picchu. As soon as you arrive to the complex, it is our job to take you to the best spot to overlook all the ruins and get a panoramic view of the landscape and the sunrise over the mountains. There will be a rendezvous to observe the sunrise (if weather allows) in order to get spectacular views of the Lost City of the Incas. You will then have a 2 hour guided tour around Machu Picchu, with plenty of free time afterwards to explore on your own. If you have tickets to climb the amazing mountain of Huaynapicchu, your guide will direct you to where this hike begins. Please make sure this is arranged at least a month in advance of your visit, as tickets do sell out. It is $25 USD per person. Once you are done exploring all Machu Picchu has to offer, you will take a bus down to Aguas Calientes for lunch. Then we will take an afternoon train back to Ollantaytambo and from there we will take a private bus back to Cusco where we will drop you off at your hotel.
